My kid sister just got a job in my favorite sandwich shop. She finished her undergraduate work last May, and she's quickly discovered that holding a BA from a prestigious liberal arts university means very little in the work world. To get a real career in her field, she'll have to go back for a Master's (at least). Despite her brilliance and her work ethic, she's joined the ranks of thousands of members of Pepsi Generation Next© who went off to college a few years ago but are now living back in their parents' basements, working minimum wage jobs, and playing World of Warcraft. Because of this, we've been dubbed the Boomerang Generation and accused of being incurably adolescent. It's not all our fault though. Ever since the first day in Miss Gerkin's kindergarten class, we were taught we could grow up to be whatever we wanted; all along, the truth was that we could grow up to be whatever someone else would pay us for. That was a mean trick, Miss Gerkin.

But I do admit that the WoW has gotten a bit out of hand. I mean, I like dragons and stuff, but seriously...

So about my sister and the sandwich shop...

I thought it was really cool. Not just because I was looking forward to free sandwiches (though the thought did cross my mind). I thought it was cool because I thought it was a great little shop. I've been in there a billion times. They have this Smokehouse Turkey Wrap... mmm! Party for your taste buds! She'd also been job-hunting for quite a while with no success, so we were all pretty relieved that she finally landed something.

Then she came home from her first day of work, plopped down on the couch, and declared that she hated it and was going to immediately start looking for something else.

Being the loving older sibling, I immediately started dispensing some love of the "tough" variety. My sister is a great kid and pretty hard-working, but she's not very good at taking orders. (Trust me -- I've been trying to give her orders for 22 years now.) Naturally, I thought she needed to man up a bit in the face of an obnoxious boss or sore feet or whatever was ailing her. With the economy all in a shambles, you don't walk out on a brand-spankin'-new job just because you're unhappy. Especially if you live in your parents' basement.

Well, then she started explaining to me exactly why she didn't like it. Her reasons included things like the uniform they gave her -- which was a dirty company t-shirt (complete with grease smudges & stink), which some former employee had left in a wad in a corner of the coatroom; the food prep area, where other employees (manager included) were consuming their own food and drinks on the disinfected(ish) prep counter whilst preparing orders; and the mushrooms, which her trainer advised her to throw into the slicer without cleaning, even when she inquired about the conspicuous clumps of dirt on them.

Um, yeah.

Obviously, anybody would think the place a bit suspect after hearing that, but I used to manage a little coffee bar, and I am an exacting sumbitch when it comes to Health Code. You think it's bad; I know precisely how bad it is. And if those kind of blatant things are going on, I also know that they aren't monitoring the temp of their refrigerators or the concentration of their disinfectant rinse or the laundering of their rags or... well, I could go on for a while.

So ever since my kid sister got a job at my favorite sandwich shop, I don't eat there anymore.

What's that thing they say about ignorance... and bliss?

Status Update: G is Stir-Crazy

My life is a bit of a dichotomy. In the summertime, I hardly sit still. This past summer was especially action-packed -- as you probably noticed -- so much so that I took my cat to my parents' house in June and didn't pick him up again until mid-August. I took over 2500 photos in four countries over the course of those three months, and I wrote nearly 200 pages, including personal journals, notes on traveling, bits of fiction, and of course, this blog. This is my idea of a rewarding summer: every day worn threadbare and something to show for it in the end.

If I could live this way twelve months a year, I probably would, but the bills don't pay themselves -- even those sneaky "auto-pay" ones -- and I've yet to find a creditor who'll take a story or a photo in lieu of a check.

So when autumn comes, as it invariably must, I turn to the other half of my existence. I dust off stacks of novels, inventory boxes of ball-point pens, and attempt to find my glasses. I dig my dress clothes out of the back of my closet and polish my boots, and the transformation is complete -- from rootless amateur travel guru to studious, sensible, state-certified literature teacher. Camera for dry-erase marker; plane tickets for ID tag; travel brochures and maps for Browning and Shelley, Miller and Vonnegut. My seat-of-the-pants lifestyle vanishes in a neat stack of syllabi, the regulated chiming of bells, the daily comings and goings of my students -- each face in its assigned place at the appointed time. Even when I don't tell them where to sit, they establish their own routines and cling to them stalwartly. They arrive not just at the same time each day, but in the same order like clockwork: Labrina, Ethan, Taj, Kelsey, Tyler... David arrives two minutes late with a pass from the office.

This is what I do from the first of September to the end of May. Not a bad gig, really.

... But if you know anybody who takes stories and photos instead of checks...

Great Tweaks for Vista

Love it or hate it, Windows Vista is here to stay as the default operating system for those buying PC laptops on the market today. We all know Vista requires more hardware power, such as 2GB of RAM being almost a necessity to get decent performance, but are there Vista OS and software tweaks you can do to improve performance without buying better hardware? There certainly are, and our forum members are working together to collect them all.

1. Disable TMM

This tweak is responsible for about a 3-5 second delay and blank screen flash when you start Vista. It searches for external monitors but is unnecessary.

If you are not using an external monitor, or don't switch back and forth always then turn TMM off. This is responsible for a 3-5 second pause and blank flash you get when turning your computer on.

Here's how to fix that annoying black flicker on boot:

Go start/control panel/administrative options/task scheduler.
1. On the left-hand side, click "Task Scheduler Local" (you should already be there, but just in case).
2. Expand "Task Scheduler Library," then "Microsoft," then "Windows," then click "MobilePC."
3. Up top, you'll see a task called "TMM." Click it, and on the right-hand side, click "Disable."
4. You're done!

Start time reduced and blank flash gone!!!!

2. Use TuneXP 1.5 (TY and Rep Trebuin) (Click here)

This little XP program works great on Vista and reduces your boot time by reorganizing it. The program is phenomenal and has no side effects except a much quicker start speed. As you get more knowledgeable, there are a bunch of other great utilities in the program. Basically, it takes all your boot files and places them at the front of the disk.

This is the best tweak in our arsenal as there are several reports that it will cut your start time in half. I have verified this with my Vista 64-bit startup (20 seconds) and have cut my sons 32-bit Vista startup time in half to 40 seconds.

I use it on both my Vista 32 and 64 bit systems and it works great. Word to the wise though, dont use later versions. This version is the only tested for this.

Install the program and if asked to select a drive, select 'C'
Go to Memory and File System and Click on Ultra-Fast booting (it may appear to freeze but it's working)
Once it's done, it will inform you not to reboot your system until defragmentation is complete
Bring up your Task Manager from your system tray by right clicking in the tray bottom right and select Task Manager
Go to processes
You will see two processes relating to defrag. Dont restart your machine until they dissappear.

3. Disable Vista Search Indexing

All versions of Vista have Search Indexing enabled by default which is an unneeded resource for most. Its function is to continuously update files on your system so that they can be made available for faster searching. Unfortunately, this takes its toll on system performance which is why its listed in several tweaking programs as a top teak; I agree totally.

To disable Windows indexing:

Click Start, then computer;
Right click on Local Disk 'C:'
Left click on Properties;
Uncheck 'Index this Drive for Faster Searching';
Let it complete and select 'Include subfolders and files' in any subsequent dialog box

From here we will go one step further and turn off Windows Search in your services

Click on start/run and type in 'MSConfig' and hit ok
Click on Services tab and find Windows Search
Uncheck/Apply and Ok, you're done!!!

If you think you'll need search, don't mess with this, but if not it's a great way to speedup your system.

4. Get CCleaner, it Works with 32/64Bit (Click here)

CCleaner (formerly Crap Cleaner) is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused and temporary files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster, more efficiently and giving you more hard disk space. The best part is that it's fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and Free!

It cleans the following:

Internet Explorer Cache, History, Cookies, Index.dat
Recycle Bin, Temporary files and Log files
Recently opened URLs and files
Third-party application temp files and recent file lists (MRUs)
Including: Firefox, Opera, Media Player, eMule, Kazaa, Google Toolbar, Netscape, Office XP, Nero, Adobe Acrobat, WinRAR, WinAce, WinZip and more...

It also contains an 'Advanced Registry Scanner' and cleaner to remove unused and old entries to include File Extensions, ActiveX Controls, ClassIDs, ProgIDs, Uninstallers, Shared DLLs, Fonts, Help Files, Application Paths, Icons, Invalid Shortcuts and more...

There is also a Windows Startup editor as well as a back-up tool just in case you delete something your not supposed to.

5. Turn Off User Account Control (UAC)

This tweak is best followed after a 'clean' install with respect to the below listed advisory.

One of the most annoying things in Vista is the protection of your system through UAC. Before I knew how to disable it I considered throwing the system out the window. The purpose of UAC is to make you confirm a large number of everyday functions in order to somehow protect your system from malware infections. In any case heres how to shut it off (or turn it back on).

Click on start and then click on your username picture top right of the start menu.
Click on 'Turn User Account Control on or off.'
Uncheck (or check) User Account Control, select ok and restart.

Thats it except...

There needs to be a word of caution in turning UAC on and off. There is a process called virtualization that, when UAC is 'on' saves program data files (things like INI files, configuration files, saved game files etc.) within a totally separate area for each individual user. If you then turn UAC off, there have been reports that certain programs may be unable to find that saved data. The truth, in fact, is that the data is still there but only visible to the program in this 'virtualization folder' once UAC has been turned on again.

An example is... If UAC is on and you install some game, and the game then saves files to that program's main directory and subsequently you turn UAC off. Those files may appear to the game that they have been deleted when, in all actuality, they are stored in this folder and only accessible through virtualization when UAC is on.

6. Turn Off Unused Windows Features

This tweak is actually a 'two in one' as it saves disk space by turning off unneeded windows features as well as improving performance by shutting down Remote Differential Compression (RDC). Briefly, RDC monitors changes in files in order to transfer them with minimum compression over a network, thus eliminating the transfer of an entire file which has been already moved. This checking and rechecking can hinder system performance. With respect to the other features that I will suggest shutting off, I myself only leave Games, Ultimate Extras (both self explanatory) and Tablet PC. I choose to leave tablet PC as it enables a little feature called Snipping Tool which I absolutely love. Anyone who hasn't used it, type 'snipping tool' in the 'Run' box and enjoy.

In any case, the tweak is as follows:

Press Start/Control Panel/Classic View and select Programs and Features
Choose 'Turn Windows Features On and Off
You can safely unselect 'Indexing Service, Remote Differential Compression, Tablet PC Optional Components (if you don't want Snipping Tool), Windows DFS Replication Service, Windows Fax & Scan (unless you use Fax through a modem) and Windows Meeting Space.

And if you want to be really smart, DFS Replication duplicates files for use among multiple PCs in a network and keeps them in sync. It's not very useful on a stand alone.

7. Windows Snipping Tool IS AMAZING!

I let the cat out of the bag in the last tweak for #6, so I figured I might as well spill the beans. If you have Vista Premium or above you have a great new tool called Snipping Tool. It enables you to freeze whatever is on your screen and take a picture of it. You may notice that I use this in tons of my threads as it is so easy.

To get to it...

Click Start/All Programs/Accessories and you'll find the tool there, or...
Start 'Run' and type 'snippingtool'.

Just for a bit of a background, this is Microsofts description of 'The Tool'

NOTE: If you delete Tablet PC features from Vista, this will not work!

8. Eliminate Unneeded Startup Programs

When your computer starts, there are a number of programs that start automatically and remain running in the background which steal away much needed memory. They add up in time and although many have no real use to the average user, others can be eliminated from starting automatically and started from the 'All Programs' or 'Quick Launch' menu as required. My best example of this is Messenger (or AIM/ICQ) which starts and hogs valuable resources even when your not using it.

First lets see how to get there to see what we have shall we?

Type 'msconfig' in the Run command (or Windows key + R)
Press Start/Control Panel/Admin Tools/System Configuration/Startup; or
Download this excellent freeware program called Startup Inspector

I personally like the program for the new user because it has a consultant which, not only tells you what each program is, but also tells you which are required by the system, user chosen, recommended, not required or unknown.

Now what can we disable and eliminate from the startup process? This is much an individual choice but I personally have shut down all that start with 'NVIDIA, Messenger, Office, Nwiz, quicktime". Be careful not to turn off important processes, when in doubt don't disable a process, but if it's something obvious and you know you don't want it then disable it.

Try these easy Firefox tweaks and you’ll see that you’re surfing the Internet from 3 to 30 times faster!

To get started, open your Firefox web browser. In the address/location bar type [about:config] and then press your Enter key. (NOTE: DON’T TYPE THE BRACKETS.)

Bypass Megaupload country slot limit without toolbar, extension

Internet users who live in a country outside the United States would usually get limited country slot error when trying to download files from Mega upload. Mega upload requires the visitors to install the Alexa tool bar to proceed downloading and it will be quite troublesome if we’re using public computer or prefer not to install information gathering software like the Alexa Tool bar. There are several ways to solve this either by using US based proxy or by applying some tweaks to your computer/internet browser which is the most effective method this time. Those tweaks are:

Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.5 tweak:

1. Go to address bar and type about:config . Press enter

2. Look for general.useragent.extra.firefox using the filter and double click on it

3. Change the default text with this: Firefox/2.0.0.5 MEGAUPLOAD 1.0

Windows Registry tweak (for Internet Explorer 7 and Internet Explorer 6):

1. Open run in the start menu and type regedit. Press enter.

2. in Registry Editor window, go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Setting\5.0\User Agent\Post Platform]

3. Right click on ‘Post Platform’ and add new string value. Enter “Alexa Toolbar”. Save the registry and restart your computer.

Note: For IE 7.0 the “Post Platform” will be located at:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mcft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent\Post Platform]

I knew a lot of us here use Rapidshare to download and share a lot of stuff. It's quite annoying when we were unable to download for a certain period after downloading a big file. What are going to be shared to day is how to download from Rapidshare using proxy so that you won't have to face the 1 hour limitation problem again.

The programs that we need are a browser with ability to use proxy. I use Slimbrowser for two reasons:

1) I don't want to delete my Firefox or IE cache and cookies files.

2) It's very lite and not a resource hogger

Steps:

1. Download the browser from this location. Install it.
2. Get a proxy list here. This trick requires the usage of proxy server to work. So don't skip this step. Grab one proxy or more!
3. This is how you are going to setup your proxy

:Click Tools > Proxies > Organize Proxies

- In the Name field, enter something to identify your proxy, for example, Brazil #1
- In the first address field, enter the proxy address you got from Proxy4Free,
for example, 200.162.195.62
- In the second address field, enter the proxy port, for example, 3128
- If you want to set the entered proxy as the default proxy, then click the
Set As Current Proxy button
- Click OK to close the dialog box

* If you want to add more proxies, repeat the steps above again and again.

4. After you have setup the proxy, copy and paste the Rapidshare download link to your
browsers’ address bar, and wait for the Rapidshare page to launch.

5. In Rapidshare website, do the followings:

- Press enter and scoll down to bottom and click the FREE button

- Wait until the counter reaches zero or use any auto-reveal-link-utility
- Copy paste the download link into your favorite download manager, for
example, Flashget
- Download the file happily

Troubleshooting

Note that if Rapidshare gives you error like this;

This IP is not allowed to use free anonymous services.. or Your IP, xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is downloading a file…

It's time to use another proxy!!! In Slimbrowser, go to menu, Tools > Proxies and select another proxy you already entered before

6) After downloading a file, don’t forget to clear your trace!

In Slimbrowser go to menu Tools > Internet Options to open the Internet Options applet
Click both Delete Cookies and Delete Files button to wipe out all references to Rapidshare. If you need to download more files, repeat all steps from 1 to 6, and hopefully you’ll be happier than ever.

Tips:

1. Do not choose proxy with port 80

2. Avoid choosing proxies addresses

By doing this trick, you can access the Device Manager by a single click from the right click menu of My Computer.

Steps:

1. Open Notepad.
2. Copy the following text to Notepad. (or download the registry file)

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\Device Manager\command]

3. Save the text file.
4. Change extension from .txt (text file) to .reg (registry file).
5. Double click open the file, click Yes and then click OK.

Hide files using Winrar and an JPG image

By using this trick, you can hide your files in a rar file, but it looks like a picture.

For this you need Winrar and a Picture to show instead the hidden file.

Steps:

1. Make a New Folder in any one drive, rename it to HIDDEN (you can put name of your wish).
Let it be in C drive, so that its address is C:\HIDDEN\

2. Copy all your secret files to that folder.
Select all the files.
Right click and select "Add to HIDDEN.rar" , here HIDDEN is the name that you gave to that folder created in first step.

3. Delete all files, except the created HIDDEN.rar file.

4. Copy an image to that folder. Let its name be taken as pic.jpg. This picture is used to hide the Winrar file that we made.

5. Now open Command Prompt. (Start > Run > cmd )

6. Change the prompt to C:\HIDDEN\ .
To do that, in cmd, first type cd c:\HIDDEN\ (works only if that folder is in windows (C:) drive).
If that folder is created in other drive like D:, then firts type D: ad press enter, then type cd D:\HIDDEN\.

7. Now type the following:
COPY /b pic.jpg + hidden.rar picture.jpg

8. That creates a picture that looks same as pic.jpg in HIDDEN folder.
This picture.jpg contains all your files.

To get your rar file, just change the extension .jpg of picture.jpg to .rar , and open it.
To hide, change the extension back to .jpg .

Make Windows XP Shutdown Faster than ever

You can make your shut down process a bit faster by the following tweak.

Steps: (download the registry file)

1. This step is very important.
Export (right click > Export) the following keys and save it to a safer place.

HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\Desktop
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control

2. Open Notepad, copy and paste the following to the Notepad.

3. Save the file and close Notepad.

4. Change extension of the file from .txt (text file) to .reg (registry file).

5. Double click open this file and click Yes and the OK .

4.) If it too ask for the password type 'ADMIN' or 'admin' in it

Use this method to enable the Command Prompt.

There are three methods: (Or download file from bottom)

Method 1: (Run method)

1. Select Run from Start menu.
2. Type the following: (better copy and paste)

REG add HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System /v DisableCMD /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
and press Enter.(Click OK)

Method 2: (Registry Editor method)

1. Open Registry Editor.
2. Get to this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System

3. In the right pane, double click on DisableCMD and set it's data to 0.
4. Close Registry Editor.

Method 3: (Group Policy method)

1. From Start menu, select Run. Type gpedit.msc and press Enter.
Group Policy editor opens.
2. Get to:
User Configuration > Administrative Templates > System
3. From the right pane, double click open Prevent access to the command prompt.
4. Set Disable and click OK.
5. Exit Group Policy editor.

Download files:
1. CMD- enable. (.rar file, extract to get .reg file)

Hiding Notification Area

The Notification area shows the softwares which are working in background without user interface.
This area shows the notifications from different softwares, used to show the status of that software.
While using Messengers, when we close them, they minimize to the notification area. When the notification area is disabled, we can get back the closed messenger by opening it from the usual location, such as from desktop shortcut, but not from the notification area

Hiding Notification area is Not Recommended. This trick is only for a informational purpose, no responsibility will be paid to the user from the provider.

Steps:

1. Open Registry Editor. ( Start > Run > regedit )
2. Get to this key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

3. In the right pane look for NoTrayItemsDisplay.Double click open that entry and change the value to 1 (one).

Sometimes, due to some viruses or worms, your system may disable the Right click context menu.
That is, nothing happens when we right click on any place.

Use this steps only after removing all viruses and bugs from your computer.Otherwise, this method may not work.

Steps to resolve:

1. From the Start menu, select Run.
Type gpedit.msc and click OK.

2. Get to this location:

This post provides descriptions of the registry entries for policies that you can apply to the Start menu in Microsoft Windows XP.

The settings on Start menu is controlled by the registry values under the registry key,
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Here, we can create a D-WORD registry value for a setting, that has values 1 (enable) or 0 (Disable).
That is, for a setting such as, for Run in start menu, NoRun D-WORD is used. Setting its value to 1 will remove Run from Start menu, Task Manager etc. And setting the value to 0 will show Run in respective areas.

Below are the D-WORDs and its description.
All this D-WORDS must be created under the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer (except in those case which has given its on path) to take effect.(you may need to restart)
To create a D-WORD, after getting to the above key, right click in an empty space and select New > DWORD Value.

Warning :
Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might result you to even reinstall your operating system. You must Export the key before you make any changes.Modify the registry at your own risk.
